We have arranged first event of our community ‘Birding In Mumbai & Around’ at Tungareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary for a nature trail on 16-July-2006.
About Tungareshwar WLS: This unique forest comprises of three different habitats (Dry deciduous, Moist deciduous and Semi Evergreen), which are presumable, a corridor between SGNP and Tansa WLS. The forest spreads over 85 sq. kms. with three different entry points to the wilderness (Vasai Phata, Vagreshwari side and Chinchoti area). The forest is famous for it’s sighting of world’s largest moth – The Atlas Moth and also for lunar moth.
This forest is rich in its biodiversity and little different than Borivli National Park, around 200+ species of birds, 150+ species of butterflies and 500+ species of moths. One can see Scarlet Minivits, Changeable Hawk Eagle, Golden fronted Chloropsis, Racket tailed drongo and the list continues…
How to reach:
By Rail: Alight on Vasai Road station on western line and on the east there are State transport (S.T.) buses and share rickshaw, which will drop you at Vasai Phata. Once the Western Express is crossed, its half km walk to the main gate of sanctuary.
By Road: Vasai Phata, situated on Mumbai Ahmedabad Highway is approx. 20 kms. from Daishar Check Naka. Right turn from Vasai phata lead you to main gate of sanctuary.
About trip: It’s a half-day trip. Please carry water bottle, light snacks and rainwear, Binoculars, Camera optional and preferably wear dull coloured clothes. Trail will start from main gate by 7:30 am and will end by 12:30 pm. All expenses born by individual participants.
